Stay Active
Stay active in your career even if you are not currently employed or have been out of the workforce for a significant period of time. Participate in relevant trade associations, take an evening course, stay up to date with industry reading, network and conduct research. Staying active in these ways will assist with keeping yourself and your resume up to date.
Resume Tips
Your resume should be approximately 2 pages in length and should be in point form with an emphasis on being concise. The format can be followed as a guideline for the structure of your resume –
- Bio:
A short bio about yourself highlighting who you are and what kind of role you are interested in. - Education History:
Describe your education history including relevant courses you might have taken or associates you have joined. - Employment History:
List your employment history in chronological order beginning with the most current. Be sure to list other relevant information, experience and skills that you have. Detail accomplishments both in the workplace and outside the office.
Interview Skills
Here are a few tips to assist once you have secured an interview with a potential employer.
- Always be positive.
- Research the company before the interview.
- Know the role and it�s responsibilities before going into the interview.
- Who is conducting the interview – research the person you will be meeting to understand their role, their job title, their style, their expectations.
- If the interview is positive, follow up with a thank you email within 24 hours of the meeting.
- Dress professionally.
- Ask 2 – 3 general questions, so have these prepared before the interview.
- Ask for feedback at the end of the interview.
