BC Hydro is supportive of flexible working arrangements to improve our capacity to meet the diverse needs of our customers, increase productivity, enhance employee engagement and help employees balance the demands of work and external commitments, such as family and community. Flexible work arrangements include part-time work, job sharing, compressed work weeks and telecommuting.

Established in 2004, the BC Hydro Women’s Network is a group of women in the company who have planned events to further their knowledge and to connect. These events assist women to increase their own capacity and competencies through the relationships they build. The network focuses on professional women of all affiliations in BC Hydro with the outcome that women helping other women at BC Hydro will help the company. Other employee networks include the Multicultural Society.

In addition to a starting annual vacation of three weeks, BC Hydro employees receive flex days to use throughout the year to help them balance their work and family responsibilities. BC Hydro is committed to work-life balance and to ensuring employees are able to take the time off they need to meet their personal and family obligations. Job Sharing, part-time, and contract positions are also available for certain positions. Many employees re-entering the workforce following maternity/parental leave are able to arrange flexible return to work schedules with their managers.

BC Hydro provides its employees with a flexible benefits plan, which allows them to tailor their benefits coverage to best meet their personal and family needs, and can be changed on an annual basis. BC Hydro also provides a maternity leave top-up.

BC Hydro has recently piloted lifestyle counselling services to select locations that are designed to support, motivate and provide resources for employees looking to make a lifestyle change. Employees also have 24-hour access to an Employee Family Assistance Program. This service, amongst others, offers information on daycare facilities and other helpful information for new parents.

BC Hydro provides private rooms that are suitable for employees that might need respite from their workstations for health and wellness reasons including breastfeeding, they are equipped with a fridge and other amenities.
