We are pleased to be able to feature McNeill Nakamoto Recruitment Group on the Progressive Employers of Canada list.

Connect Moms, in conjunction with momcafe and Martin Group International, provided the below criteria as a guideline for possible programs or initiatives that may exist at McNeill Nakamoto Recruitment Group.

McNeill Nakamoto provides quarterly coaching sessions with a strategic coach to assist with each individual’s Focus Plan, and help with determining Core Values. McNeill Nakamoto has very few formal policies when it comes to staff work/life balance. McNeill Nakamoto prefers to interpret each unique situation to what is best for the individual and the team.

Access to emergency childcare

Although there is not access to emergency childcare, McNak is such a flexible and understanding employer that should a situation arise where the employee needs to head home to take care of their child, then by all means they do so. Staff can access email, our database system etc. online, should they require to be in touch with clients when they are physically away from the office.

Flex-time

Several of McNeill Nakamoto’s employees’ workdays are dictated by the days they have childcare at home. In addition, some of the mothers take extra time off during their children’s school holidays, as well as special events, such as field trips, out of town sports tournaments, etc. A number of employees on this team have come back after having children or changes in their personal lives to customized roles that fit their current situation.

McNeill Nakamoto does its best to make the most of the December Holiday season so that staff can spend time with family. This is additional to paid vacation time.

Job cooperatives / job sharing

Both of McNeill Nakamoto’s Client Experience Managers are mothers who previously worked with McNeill Nakamoto in a full time capacity. They continue to work part time with McNeill Nakamoto due to changes in their children’s lives. This is an ideal situation for both to work together and share experiences, both professional and personal.

Part-time or contract positions

McNeill Nakamoto has a unique work environment whereby 65% of the team are women, many of whom are mothers. They even have a grandmother on the team! This grandmother enjoys the flexibility of working at McNeill Nakamoto so she can take extra time to visit with her grandchildren who live outside of Canada. All the mothers at McNeill Nakamoto work in a part-time capacity, so that they have the time to fulfill the needs of their families at home.

Gradual re-entry after maternity leave

After the government’s one-year maternity leave, the employee can make the choice whether to return back to work or not. On several recent occurrences, employees have been offered to come back to work on a part time basis, and gradually build up on that time as their children’s schedule changes.

Concierge services

The management team are so well networked that sometimes it feels like a concierge service. Access to sport tickets and other events are just an ask away!

Lactation rooms

When on occasion a mother with a young baby is at the office, there is always a private quiet room made available for nursing.

On-site daycare

Although McNeill Nakamoto does not offer on-site daycare, children are always welcome in the office. Office doors can be closed for privacy, and to not disturb other employees.

Information and access to daycare facilities in your area

Each situation is different, but at this time, all of the McNeill Nakamoto mothers are lucky to have good at-home childcare whether that is a nanny or a grandmother. Most of the children are in either Elementary or High School. Currently there is a new daycare facility under construction just three blocks from the office.

Health benefits

McNeill Nakamoto employees are covered by BC Medical. In addition, they are offered a corporate trust, which offers the ultimate flexibility for medical and dental.

I would like to nominate McNeill Nakamoto as a List-Worthy employer.

McNeill Nakamoto is a highly supportive and progressive company owned and
run by two dynamic women, Cheryl Nakamoto and Sarah McNeill. I worked for
this recruitment company for 4 months and I could not have asked for a
better working environment prior to the birth of my son. They were flexible
when it came to time off for pre-natal classes and medical appointments.
Their whole ethos promotes a healthy work/life approach that allows for
women to combine family with career. An absolute joy to work for.

I have had a great experience with McNeill Nakamoto for over 7 years. I began as a temporary recruiter in 2002 and it was a wonderful fit for me personally and professionally. Cheryl, Sarah and the rest of the team were a great group to work with and for. I was fully supported the following year when I got pregnant: able to take time for doctor’s appointments when I needed to, meeting with my car broker when I traded in my convertible for a wagon (a sad day), and sometimes just to lie down between appointments. When it was time to return to work following my maternity leave, I really didn’t want to work full time – they created a part time position that suited my needs. I have now had my second child and want to spend most of my time with my family, but getting out of the house and into a professional environment every once in a while was ideal for me. Once again, McNeill Nakamoto came through…they created a position whereby I could work one day a week, and still drop off and pick up my daughter from school. Although many of the staff have changed, Cheryl and Sarah have still maintained a creative and energetic environment that make you want to keep coming back. As parents themselves, they understand the needs of working mothers and how important it is to be there for the milestone’s in your children’s lives and encourage us to do what we need to do for ourselves and our families. I think that their approach only serves to make better and more productive employees and a great working environment.

I can’t believe how quickly time goes! After several years as a full time HR Generalist I decided, after the birth of my second child, to become a full time mom. As the years progressed along with my children’s schedules, I found I was left with more time in the day to pursue other interests. An amazing opportunity came along to join McNak on a full time basis. With the support of my family, I accepted. From the get go Sarah and Cheryl always supported my dual role. If my children needed me, if there was a volley ball or basket ball game I was not only given the time to go but encouraged to.

However, as life is forever evolving I found after 2 years of full time employment, that my children – teenagers in high school and college – schedules’ had changed once again. I felt (as most mothers) the need and desire to adjust my schedule to give them the support and time that so many teens need. Once again, both Sarah and Cheryl supported my decision to step down from my full time role. After a short departure from McNak I returned – this time to a part time role created by Sarah and Cheryl around me and my family!

Sarah and Cheryl have allowed me the flexibility to once again go back to the ‘drop off’ and ‘pick up’ each day, to attend out of town games or just to ensure that I am available to be able to attend to the needs of ‘teenagers’.

McNak is by far the most progressive company in recognizing the demands and pressures on working moms! They fully embrace work/life balance for ALL their staff but as working moms themselves, they have made McNak an amazing place to work for moms who want it all!

  5. This sounds like an interesting job and a great company. How might one apply there?
