WorkSafeBC is a provincial statutory agency dedicated to the reduction – and eventual elimination – of work-related injury, illness, disease, and death in B.C. workplaces, and to easing the physical, financial and psychological burdens on workers and their families when they do occur. We insure over 197,000 Employer’s within the Province of British Columbia and provide coverage to over 2,000,000 employees in the Province.
WorkSafeBC is the operating name of the Workers’ Compensation Board of British Columbia. The name conveys the spirit of WorkSafeBC’s values and guiding principles, as well as the organization’s commitment to prevention, return-to-work, and customer service.
Health Benefits and Maternity/Paternity Benefits

* Tops up maternity leave benefits to 75% of salary for 17 weeks, parental leave benefits for 13 weeks; 30-week top-up for adoptive parents

* There is no formal policy for this but we are open to explore accommodations on an individual basis based on operational requirements. We do have employees who were previously full time will return on a part-time basis or job share arrangements.
Alternative Work options – flexible start/finish work hours
* For A-Type employees, they must work around the core hours of 9:00am and 3:00 pm. Their start and end times are flexible by mutual agreement with their immediate Manager, based on operational requirements.
* For B-Type employees, they have the ability to organize their own work week, with the primary consideration being the effective and efficient performance of their duties. However, B-Type employees can flex their start / finish times for business and personal reasons as needed.
* Telecommuting/work from home
* Formal “earned days off” (EDO) program (describe below):
Employees can work 25 minutes extra each day and receive 1 day(s) off/month
Time Off Allowance
* Vacation
Full-time Management employees start with 4 weeks vacation to a maximum of 7 weeks.
Full-time Exempt employees start with 3 weeks vacation to a maximum of 7 weeks.
* Earned Time Off (ETO) – is an arrangement where permanent employees can choose to work additional scheduled time in order to earn time off within their work schedules. In order to participate in the ETO program, employees must work an additional 25 minutes per work day. Their ETO time (23.56 hours) will be banked on a quarterly basis to be used in the following quarter, for a total of 94.24 hours annually. The ETO arrangement is client service oriented and is based on the understanding that in all cases operational requirements must be met.
* Education Leave – Employees are entitled to leave with pay to write examinations and/or up to 6 weeks leave with pay may be granted to allow employees to participate in courses to improve their qualifications in the service where the connection between the course and WorkSafeBC’s operation is positive and direct.
* Medical and Dental Treatment – employees in areas where adequate medical and facilities are not available will be allowed reasonable time off for required travel and treatment up to a maximum of 3 working days in a calendar year to receive medical and dental care at the nearest medical centre.
* Serious Illness in Family Leaves – in the case of a serious illness of a close relative an employee will be allowed up to 2 days with pay. Additional time off without pay may be granted as needed.
* Care and Nurturing Leave – Permanent employees may request a leave without pay to a maximum of five (5) years during their period of employment for the care and nurturing of children. Health Benefits – Medical, Extended Health, Dental, Basic Life & ADD continue during this leave with WorkSafeBC paying the premiums. Employees are able to purchase pensionable service for the period of the leave upon return from the leave, subject to any Revenue Canada restrictions.
* Self Funded Leave – Permanent employees may choose to participate in a plan to fund a one (1) year leave of absence through salary deferral. Employees are permitted to defer 20% of their base salary for a period of four (4) years to receive pay during a one year leave of absence taken in the fifth year.
Health and Wellness Centre
In the Richmond work location, we have an employee health and wellness centre. A full time Occupational Health Nurse is responsible for the Richmond complex designated first aid attendant program to ensure appropriate first aid service is provided when necessary. In addition the Occupational Health Nurse is available to employees in all work locations to answer health and wellness questions, is an excellent resource for finding further information relating to health conditions or risks, provides regular blood pressure monitoring and weight management services, and also has a quiet room where employees can go and relax and/or do quiet exercises to facilitate the ongoing management of a health condition.

Wellness Rewards Program
The Wellness Rewards Program is designed to encourage WorkSafeBC employees to adopt a healthy and balanced lifestyle by:
* providing leadership and support for healthy lifestyles and a healthy workplace through encouragement and education;
* rewarding points to individuals for participating in fitness activities, health screening clinics, family activities, corporate events, education sessions and providing incentives (gift cards for various merchants) for reaching specified numbers of points.
On-site Massage Program
A registered massage therapist is on-site 8-12 full days per month and employees can schedule a ½ hour appointment on their own time for a small fee of $1/minute. The on-site massage program has expanded to include our Prince George, Nanaimo, Nelson, Kelowna, Coquitlam and Burnaby offices.
Lactation Rooms
WorkSafeBC doesn’t currently have designated lactation rooms, however, we have a number of meeting rooms which could be reserved for this purpose, although we haven’t had a request for this reason.

Training and Development
WorkSafeBC provides a variety of training and development programs and learning options to support individual, team and organizational development and performance. Programs include a generous tuition reimbursement program, comprehensive, in-house, job-specific training and mentoring for key roles, customized, just-in-time training for business changes and leadership development curriculums targeted to different leadership levels.
The training and development offerings are provided using a variety of delivery strategies including classroom instruction, self-directed e.Learning, blended learning, peer mentoring, on-the-job training and coaching.
The Tuition Reimbursement program supports the corporate and HR strategies for providing “access to learning and development options for every employee”, through fair and reasonable guidelines. Tuition subsidies for courses related to an employee’s current position:
* 50% of tuition. Annual max: $ 5000 (for degree, diploma or certificate programs) plus an interest-free loan for up to an additional $5000 towards books and tuition.
